Getting started

Polycarbonate is the editor you build Studz games in. This page takes you from nothing to a published game.

1. Install and sign in

  1. Get Polycarbonate from the download page. It installs next to the Studz game client and keeps itself up to date.
  2. Open it and choose Sign in. Your browser opens a Studz page that asks you to approve Polycarbonate; approve it and return to the editor. Polycarbonate never sees your password.
  3. Verify your email in Settings. Publishing, uploading and the Creator Store need a verified email on an account in good standing.

2. Make a game

Open the Games page and create a game (a title is all you need). Then in Polycarbonate choose File > Open from Studz and pick it. The game is now linked: everything you do is saved to it.

  • Build with Insert > Part on the Home tab (blocks, balls, cylinders and wedges) and the Toolbox on the left: Store holds models, decals and audio other creators shared; Saved holds the ones you pressed Get on; Mine holds what you made; Local holds models you saved on your own computer.
  • Select, move, scale and rotate with the tools on the Home tab.
  • Script by adding a Script (runs on the game server), a LocalScript (runs on each player's computer) or a ModuleScript from the Explorer. See the scripting reference.
  • Look at the result with Play (F5). Use Test > Local Server to run the server and a player separately, the way the live game runs; LocalScripts and remotes only work there.

3. Autosave

You don't need to save by hand:

WhatWhen it is saved
Script editsAbout a second after you stop typing, into the place
A game linked to StudzEvery 15 seconds if anything changed, and when you close Polycarbonate, sign out, publish or press Play
A place opened from a fileEvery 20 seconds back into that file, and when you close

The status line next to the place name shows when the last cloud save happened. Ctrl+S saves right now.

4. Publish

Choose File > Publish to Studz and pick the game. Each publish becomes a numbered version; the live game switches to it straight away. You can see every version, switch back to an older one and watch your game's script output on the game's page in the hub. New games start private; open the game's Settings tab to make it public or unlisted.

5. After you publish

  • Share it: public games appear on the Play page; unlisted games work for anyone with the link.
  • Earn: add game passes in the hub and sell avatar clothing in the catalog.
  • Give back: publish models you are proud of to the Creator Store.
